The 9th International Conference on Environmental and Engineering Geophysics, hosted by the Chinese Geophysical Society and sponsored by the College of Geoexploration Science and Technology of Jilin University, was successfully held in Huatian Hotel of Changchun from October 11 to 14, 2020, with the theme of "Engineering and Environmental Geophysics in Smart Urban and Rural Areas".
At the opening ceremony of October 12, 2020, ZHENG Weitao, the Vice President of Jilin University, made a brilliant speech and expressed a warm welcome to the leaders and experts who came to the conference and extended sincere thanks to all relevant units that gave strong support to the conference. He believes that all participants will have a better understanding and deeper cooperation through the platform of this conference, and wishes all participants can improve exchanges, learn from each other, and harvest fruitful results in the academic development of environmental and engineering geophysics. The conference was presided over by Professor ZENG, Zhaofa, Dean of College of Geoexploration Science and Technology, Jilin University.
In order to overcome the impact of the Covid-19, the conference adopted a combination of online and offline. It has achieved extensive academic exchanges around the world. During the conference, the delegates jointly discussed scientific issues as Urban Geophysics, Shallow Surface Geophysical Progress, Engineering Geophysics, Water Resources Geophysics, Mining Geophysics, Disaster Geophysical Survey, Archaeological Geophysics. Aerogeophysics, Geophysical & Signal Processing, Geophysical Instruments & Software, Big Data, and Smart Urban & Rural Areas. Those issues have gained broad academic consensus.
The first International Conference on Environmental and Engineering Geophysics was held at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) in 2004. The purpose of the conference is to promote exchanges and improve the level of environmental and engineering geophysical exploration, and to provide a platform for extensive exchanges and consultation for those engaged in scientific research, technology development, and production applications in the field. The conference held every two years. In the condition of a clear theme, warm academic atmosphere, and obvious effect, the conference was not only welcomed by domestic geophysicists but also concerned and praised by a large number of environmental and engineering geophysicists. The conference gradually became the largest and highest-standard academic one in this field in recent years.
Shallow surface geophysics refers to the theoretical and applied research on the detection technology of the earth's surface layer by using the principles and methods of physics. It has a wide range of applications, supporting the needs of human survival and development. On the one hand, people either obtain water and minerals or build pipeline systems for underground water, electricity, gas, communication, transportation, and other utilities in modern cities. On the other hand, all kinds of wastes produced by human activities are discharged and buried on the earth's surface, forming a special geological layer of the human era. Shallow surface geophysics is getting more and more attention from both technical (physical) and non-technical (political, social, legal) aspects. Because of the combination of the urbanization process and the development of geophysical technology in China, geophysicists in China have better scientific research opportunities than those in western developed countries. The successfully convening of the conference will greatly promote the development of shallow surface geophysics in China and establish a wide range of academic exchanges with international counterparts.
PENG Suping, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, made a report on “the safety detection technology system of urban roads and underground space”, LIN Jun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, made a report of “Consideration on the developing of Geophysical prospecting technological innovation in China”, and DI Qingyun, the researcher of Chinese Academy of Sciences, made a report of “New Technology of Electromagnetic Exploration and its Application”, ZHANG Jie, academician of the American Academy of Engineering, introduced the progress of near-surface geophysical imaging technology in the 21st century, and achieved shocking academic results, which greatly inspired the enthusiasm of geophysicists in scientific research.
More than 300 people attend the conference. A total of 160 academic papers were received. More than 100 people gave oral academic reports. More than 60 people put up posters.
